Make waves about something…

Song for a Whale

By Lynne Kelly

From fixing the class computer to repairing old radios, twelve-year-old Iris is a tech genius. But she’s the only deaf person in her school, so people often treat her like she’s not very smart. If you’ve ever felt like no one was listening to you, then you know how hard that can be.

Iris learns about Blue 55, a real whale who travels alone and can’t speak to other whales, and she understands how he must feel. She has an idea – what if there was a way to “sing” to Blue 55? Will Iris and Blue 55 finally feel heard?

Join us for this beautiful and heartwarming story of a girl with determination and heart. Is it enough to get her across 3,000 miles to sing to a whale? We’ll find out as we journey to Alaska with Song for a Whale!

While we read together and independently, we will learn new vocabulary and practice grade-appropriate grammar and literary skills. We will also incorporate other subjects that relate to our reading:

  • Sound Waves and the Invention of the Radio
    • What is sound?
    • Sound waves and how ears hear
    • Volume and pitch
    • The history of the radio
  • All About Whales
    • Whale communication
    • Ocean noise and the threat to whales
    • Whale migration habits & travel patterns
  • American Sign Language
    • The prevalence of deafness in the United States
    • Ways to communicate with deaf people besides sign language
